The problem

South Africa needed a way to reach pregnant women and new mothers directly, at national scale, with maternal health information and support — regardless of which clinic or system held their record.

What I did

Over seven years at Jembi Health Systems, I progressed from developer to team lead, working across MomConnect and the open-source health toolset underneath it — including core development on OpenHIM, the health information mediator now deployed in national HIEs across multiple countries, and the OpenHIM Mapping Mediator. As team lead, I managed 2-3 developers across 3-4 concurrent international digital health projects, and ran technical training sessions in Tanzania and Ethiopia to build in-country engineering capacity.

Outcome

MomConnect reached hundreds of thousands of registered mothers — one of the clearer cases in my career of infrastructure work translating directly into people getting care.
